If your Anti Virus is running when windows starts.. Usually the Anti-virus icon is down near the clock (lower right hand corner) at all times. There is no need to ''Scan'' with it. It's already there protecting your system.

The only time you really need to scan the entire system, is if you just installed the antivirus program.

You should scan new downloaded programs, music, pictures etc.., before you open them.

To do a full scan and be sure that you have gotten all files, start in Safe Mode and run a Full Scan. Be sure you virus defs are up to date.

If you are talking about the regular antivirus program that stays resident on your computer when you start up, there is no best time to run it, it should be always active in regular mode.
as said above it runs all the time

but it is possible for things to slip by

i have mine set to run automatically

3 times a week

but if something changes or looks different some how

i run a manual scan

im on the net 18 hours a day
