I think my computer has a virus and now it won't even restart. What do I do!?!?!?

So all these ads about drive cleaner, winfixer, and other spyware crap have been popping up on my desktop for 3 or 4 days. I ran my antivirus thing but the ads would just pop up again later. Then after I ran a scan and deleted some stuff it told me to restart the computer so I told it to restart, but now it won't start up again. The computer and the fans seem to be running fine and the monitor comes on but it only goes as far as the screen that says 'please select the operating system to start' and then at the bottom it says 'for troubleshooting and other startup options press F8'. It doesn't respond at all when i press F8 and if I select the operating system it just starts the process over again and goes as far as this screen again. I can't call the company because it's a computer my brother made, so I really have no idea what to do. I also noticed that when it runs the BIOS check it says it's not installed, but i don't know if that means anything or not. Please help me if you can!!!

This sounds pretty bad. You need to use anti-spyware to stop the pop-ups, not your anti-virus. You need to scan from Safe Mode, if you can't boot to safe mode by pressing F8 your going to have to reformat your computer...sorry.

My Norton antivirus subscription ended and I don't really wanna pay $115 for a renewal or the same amount for a different program atm. I personally think that one is enough. Each program you use takes up system resources and quite possibly might be considered spyware itself. Antispyware is now being incorporated into antivirus programs: that's all I use.

It SEEMS okay, but really slows down the computer, even for updates, and NEVER finds anything! I'm sure we must have at least 1-2 worms or something, as the computer is very slow. Every time I start my PC, I get a message from Symantec Antivirus saying that it has detected a virus called 'b.exe.' But when I run a scan using Symantec or Spybot, I get no threats found. There is nothing wrong with Norton but it will not function if it is installed on top of a previous one or there will be a confliction. You must delete all and only have one.

Do your self a favour, uninstall Norton, download AVG, (it's free,) and turn Windows firewall back on, (Norton turns it off).

Norton Antivirus is the worst Virus Protection software in the universe. Yes, it gets the job done, but it makes your computer run incredibly slow. I recommend Spy Sweeper with Antivirus. It is cheaper and works much better!!

If I were you I'd stay away from anything Norton, it's a power hog! If you're simply looking for a virus scanner try Avast, it's free and easy on the system memory. If you want something more try NOD32, it has great spyware/virus protection, it's not free but one of the best.
In one stupid, insane moment, I downloaded Nortons a year ago. It never worked, was recommended to uninstall, and reinstall. At that time I wasn't on broadband, each time I downloaded, and then got the updates it was six hours each time for something that never worked and which completely messed up my computer. One year later, I am still getting bills to pay for it. A lot of people are recommending AVG as completely free. I like AVG but it is only free for a certain period that I can see and then you have to purchase. If I am incorrect in this please can someone advise me. I personally like Windows Live OneCare, but after using free trial find I cannot purchase online and even if I buy from pc shop, still need to activate online. I believe others have had this problem. However, it is well worth trying.

I have the newest version of Norton, and when I plugged in my USB Flash Drive it automatically detected a virus on it. When I tried to transfer the infected file to my desktop, Norton automatically deleted it.

Are you sure it isn't scanning it on it's own? It tends to only notify you when it DOES find something, otherwise it just runs in the background.

If not, open Norton up and click on basic security. Click on Auto Protect and select 'Configure'. It will open a new window up with settings. Click general settings. It should have two boxes, the first being to scan removable media when it's detected. Make sure that box is checked.

you could probalbly restart your runtime by pressing ctrl + alt + delete and close anything in process with nv in front of it and tyhen try restart via start menu and programs
May be due to some missing dll files or any other.

If you have the setup file, try to repair. If not reinstall the anti virus again without uninstalling it.

This prevents the loss of registration key.

You may have some malware that disables Norton Internet Security. I suggest you download the free Stinger from McAfee and run it in Safe Mode. Stinger's only purpose in life is to protect the major A-V programs from disablement. I don't know if it can actually fix any damage done -- you may have to reinstall Norton -- but it should keep it from being re-disabled when you do.

Well, I think antivirus programms for linux do not exist, but I'm not very sure. As in all operating systems there are some security issues but ubuntu is pretty secure! One thing that you could do to protect your computer is to have all it's programms updated.

Norton is more like a virus than an anti-virus hogging your system's resources. I had the same problem on another PC and as soon as I removed Norton, it started working fine. I strongly recommend getting rid of Norton as soon as possible.

Norton products are known to be very resource heavy. Meaning they will use a LOT of your computer RAM and CPU which will significantly slow down your PC.

About the only thing you can do to fix it is to uninstall Norton and go with another anti-virus product.

There are many free anti-virus programs that are as good as, if not better, than Norton.

AVG Free and Avast are two of them that I use on my PC's.

I agree, AVG is a good free antivirus program...you can also try an online scan (most will remove malware, but these are online only) from most of the major companies, including Symantec (Norton), McAfee, and others. OMG, this happened to my family computer yesterday! My mom was so freaked out with the adult Ads that were icons on the desktop! LOL. Funny, but horrible.

I believe having more than 1 AV will only make them crash and come up with errors you dont have, or they will find each other as viruses.

its not the Laptop, its a general boot of windows, i usually get the NT loader error when in the bios it is set to boot off the floppy drive first, i corrected by making my HDD first, or just removing the floppy from the drive when booting up, either that, or the file is corrupt/missing, try booting from the XP cd and hit the ASR (automatic System recovery) should do the trick

Two different, but integrated applications.

As said before, Internet Explorer can be uninstalled and reinstalled. However, that routine doesn't remove and add back in the program - it mearly removes direct references (shorcuts) to the program.

As far as Windows Explorer is concerned, same thing. You can't really remove and re-add it back in.

This is how Windows is programmed - its not a component system.... mostly so MS could win anti-trust court cases for which we (people like you in this situation) pay for with non-consumer-friendly speed bumps.

Toshiba M45 S355 laptop. Worked fine two weeks ago. Now it ''burns'' for about two minutes, then says ''there was an error'' and stops. Tried two different brands of blank CDs and three different software applications (all of which previously worked). Also tried reducing the burn speed to 24X, 16X, 8X. Reduced the content being copied from 600MB to 400MB and then to 200MB. Also tried copying an entirely different set of files. Ran two different antivirus scans and found nothing. Shut down all unnecessary applications to reduce the load on system resources. Still getting the same problem.

yes ... first try to find an updated firmware for the make and model drive .... if that doesnt work google and download force aspi .. and update ur aspi layer ... still no go its most likely dead so get a new one ... if u dropped the top its prolly toast ..

Probably a problem with the actual drive itself, call the manufacturer and ask them for a solution or a new drive.

Can anyone explain what is going on with my computer. It keeps ditching information eg sometimes when I start up it fails to load the keyboard, other times does not load my printer. I don't know of any anti virus program that does that, i do know however if you right click on the file and choose scan with (whatever anti virus you have), it will tell you if it has a virus or not (also depending on your application)

I agree with yep_got.em. I personally love Norton products. I, too, have Norton 2007 for Vista on my computer, and it has never frozen on me except once. That was one out of 8 scans I've done. Perhaps it is your RAM. Upgrading to more RAM may resolve this issue.

Go to http://www.majorgeeks.com. They have far and away the BEST selection of freeware and shareware, with reviews as well. I personally use avast! and have used it for 3 years. I ditched Norton and McAffee on all of our computers and put Avast on them and never regretted it. Not only is it FREE, but in my opinion MUCH BETTER. I posted a question earlier about trojan exploit 131. I ran the virus scan with system restore disabled. But now I want to delete the risk history, it says it was left alone/ logged. I tried to clean, delete, and quarantine and it won't let me. Someone said that you can delete the log entries from risk history on the previous question I asked, but how is this done? Also someone said to do a search for the file with all options available (ie show hidden/system files) How do you do this?

More than likely you have a restore point in your Win XP. On startup, there is an option to do restore. Select the restore to last known good configuration.

It sounds like you may have one virus scanner that's calling the virus update from the other scanner a virus. You need to make sure you have only one virus scanner install ed at a time.

What happens is the update that you are trying to get contains the virus code that the scanner uses to detect viruses. But when your other scanner scans that update, it sees it as a virus because it contains virus code.

Older versions of Java had security vulnerabilities and malware would store itself in the Java cache files. You should be able to delete the cache files by going to Control Panel, Java, General tab, Temporary Internet Files settings, and deleting the cache from there.

A even simpler way is to use ATF cleaner. It can delete all cached items including old prefetch, Java cache, cookies, etc in a couple easy steps.

You should also ensure you have the most recent version of Java installed. Problems can occur if you are running more than one version of Java as they can cause conflicts with each other. Scan in safe mode which you can select by pressing f5 on start up which will enable the option mode and pick safe mode which you can run basic tasks to get your computer up and running again. Providing you have windows xp system installed and your virus scaner might work from there.

Apparently you have missing Windows files and programs that make it impossible for your computer to operate.

Spybot S%26D is a great AS program. If you did not turn on the Tea Timer it is only an ''on demand'' program. It only scans and removes when you call upon it. You saw a spybot scan result with the above statement. Basically it means that one of the programs it caught was attempting to circumvent (over ride) MS security centers settings. Which means if spybot didn't catch it, you might have had a compromised system on your hands.

I recommend that you along with removing via spybot, download either avg or avast, both are free virus protection programs. You can go to trendmicro online for a free online scan of viruses %26 spyware + free removal, it's a great 2nd opinion. Use zone alarm firewall. %26 stop using MS products. MS can barely make an operating system that works, what makes them think they can handle virus,spyware %26 firewall protection....... I don't know.

All in all, it's a good thing spybot caught the program.

no need to worry, just keep updating your antivirus though, try scanning in safe mode where all processes are disabled..their you can really see if there's an infection of some sort..
Most all computers have bugs and spam but Norton runs checks because during installation it asks if you want it to do it every day or every other or every week etc. and at what time.

Some programs find things that for example AVG won't find, nothing to worry about, if Norton really bugs you just uninstall it.

I think it is most likey the mouse. You could try remove the mouse drivers and re-installing them. If you do be careful not to disable it unless you know how to get around windows completely using the keyboard.
I am not entirely sure. But have u checked ur keyboard ?? (maybe a space bar). Just go on MS Word or even notpad and check. I don't think that is something to do with viruses or spyware.
When you unplug the mouse, does the problem stop? Does the mouse use batteries? (ie. is it wireless). Have you changed the batteries lately (weird cursor movement happens to me when the batteries are low).

If it is wireless and the batteries are fine, have you added any other wireless devices to your room lately? A phone? A keyboard?

I use zone alarm suite - it has it all antispyware, antivirus, mail protection and lots more. It isn't free but its definitely good value for money. You can even find evaluation version online.

regarding the non-free program you mentioned.... don't trust it. It may be saying so in order to make you buy it! Sometimes such programs are spyware on their own! So make sure whatever you install is something known to be safe.

i ve used ad-aware se personnel from lavasoft which has never let me down and is free for quite some time now HOWEVER an absolute ar5ehol3 of a spyware got in last weekend and neither norton or ad-aware could shift it.I Eventually i had to buy a new spyware removal tool called spynomore which worked a treat(拢30quid)and it seems to be very good.I,m still without any desktop backgrounds or screensavers as the virus tricks you into deleting all your saved pictures and emptying your recycle bin it also scrubs the path from your pictures to desktop and other programmes.Sometimes i think you need to spend money to get a decent level of protection. if you can afford 拢30 get spynomore highly recommended
