It should have following qualities:

1.Light for PC

2.Thorough scanning engine

3.Coverage to most of threats till pesent

4.Frequently updated Update Server

5.Complete security (internet security,firewall etc)

There is no best, that detects every single new threat that comes, it all comes down to the updates, now there are 2 things, internet security suite is not an anti-virus, internet security suite must have extra processes to run which are NOT light for PCs, and light for PCs that are suites usually tend to offer minimal protection. While there are some all-in-one anti-viruses that protect you using fewer processes and CPU memory. Internet security suites have multiple functions and are a bit complex to understand..as they add additional features, some don't meet certification for standards while others are strong in one area but weak in another.

The best are usually Kaspersky/Panda/NOD32 Eset/Zonealarm Pro/Norton's firewall is hard to crack but easy to leak/ BitDefender, E-Trust, because of their usual awards and praise.
