Why the problem with my antivirus scanner?

I have Norton Internet Security and I cannot get it to scan for viruses. The screen will not completely come up and then it freezes. I've had it for 10 months and I have never had this problem. I have Windows XP. Any ideas?

you could probalbly restart your runtime by pressing ctrl + alt + delete and close anything in process with nv in front of it and tyhen try restart via start menu and programs
May be due to some missing dll files or any other.

If you have the setup file, try to repair. If not reinstall the anti virus again without uninstalling it.

This prevents the loss of registration key.

Hope this will work.
your using norton thats the problem.I agree with Searchin's anwser.with only 2 months to go get rid of norton and go with avg7.5 free home edition and avg anti-spyware.

I have used this for the last 3 years and have yet to be infected with a virus or worm of any type. and best of all its free.
You may have some malware that disables Norton Internet Security. I suggest you download the free Stinger from McAfee and run it in Safe Mode. Stinger's only purpose in life is to protect the major A-V programs from disablement. I don't know if it can actually fix any damage done -- you may have to reinstall Norton -- but it should keep it from being re-disabled when you do.

Getting an alert from norton antivirus stating I have a trojan virus in diff wind temp files. What c

It says the file cannot be repair and I click on OK, then it comes right back. How do I get rid of it for good? I've already done a complete scan, but it keeps coming back.

hi, i recommand you to use firefox.

firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.

firefox can edit which site/popup to block and unblock.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

download firefox for free:

Best Wishes %26%26 Good Luck!
Clean it out.
Yeah, if you can't delete it still, then go to their website and get a tool just for that virus. Look under their support. Just down load it and run it. Should clear it up for you....
Isolate it. When a virus is found, it can either isolate the virus or destroy it in order to keep it from spreading to other computers and other files.

Norton: http://www.symantec.com/av
just delete it.

oh one more thing; search the Internet for more info and find out if it really is a virus.

not all files tagged as virus really are.
If you cannot repair it, then just delete it. It's in your temp files so it shouldn't make much of a difference.

Do i need to install antivirus and other security programmes when we have ubuntu ?

Do i need to install antivirus and other security programmes when we have ubuntu ?computer security

Well, I think antivirus programms for linux do not exist, but I'm not very sure. As in all operating systems there are some security issues but ubuntu is pretty secure! One thing that you could do to protect your computer is to have all it's programms updated.

Hope this helps!

You don't need an antivirus in Linux, just don't run your pc as root - in Ubuntu it's even secure, root is accesible only thru a password protected command.

But, if you are really paranoid about your security you can install Linux antivirus like http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-for-linux... download the .deb and double click it as root.
you don't need a anti virus program or a firewall, because Linux is very secure

Some1 knows a good free antivirus with the ability to protect my computer when I'm connected?

Since a lot of free antiviruses have only the option to scan my pc and I want it to protect it while I'm connected.

AVG has a free version of their antivirus that i use myself.

http://free.grisoft.com/

you can find others if you goto a search engine and type ''free antivirus''

Although, in my experience, this one is the least resource hungry.

If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

1. AVG Free

a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!

a. Real-time protection

b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir

a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

b. It's cute umbrella icon

c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

  • Should I completely removed Norton antivirus?

And just download AVG? The only thing i like about Norton is its firewall which protects me, and the subsription is over anyway...And Norton usually doesnt find a virus after a long hour scan anyway.

    That's up to u.

If you want to unistall and U don't like it, just do it.

Should I completely removed Norton antivirus?hijack this

Just make very, very sure Norton is completely removed and I was told only they can do that. Not sure about that one. I have disabled Norton because it won't allow me internet access. Like you, the subscription is over..... and so is Norton.
You are highly uninformed. In numerous competent independent comparative tests, Norton has outscored AVG by a large margin when it comes to detection of viruses and other malware. Frankly, AVG's performance is dismal in comparison to products such as Norton and Kaspersky Anti-Virus.

On the other hand, Norton is a bloated resource hog that uses so many CPU cycles that it becomes more trouble than it is worth.

A better choice would be Kaspersky. Luckily, it is now made available to the public for free under the name ''Active Virus Shield''. It's outstanding detection rate and low resource usage make it an excellent choice. It can be found at:
